Imploded Sculptures

Ewerdt Hilgemann, 2001

Santa Monica Blvd at Doheny, temporary installation, Fall 2003.

"Since 1984, German born Hilgemann has been fascinated by the ability to "forge by air." needing no hammer or chisel he puts natural atmospheric pressure...to sculptural use. Hilgemann welds stainless steel plates into geometric bodies...and through a unique vacuum process, removes the air from the inside. In this way, the large shapes lose their previous structure and are molded by the outside pressure into individual expressive forms."

Information about the works has been gleaned from the Art on the Outside press release. Photographs by Ruth Wallach, taken in October, 2003.
