"From LA to Palestine Clean, Drinkable Water is a Human Right"

John Knight, Sunset Boulevard west of Havenhurst Drive, Los Angeles, February-March 2010. Part of "How Many Billboards? Art in Stead" temporary project organized by the MAK Center for Art and Architecture.

"For the duration of How Many Billboards?, Knight has donated his billboard to the Middle East Children's Alliance (MECA), a nonprofit organization founded in 1988 to benefit children of the Middle East. In return, MECA chose to display a public relations ad to bring awareness to their MAIA project, which works to install water desalinization and purification systems in Gaza schools, kindergartens, and nurseries. Whether a work of art or a public relations ad, the gesture isolates the function of the billboard itself as a means of communication, and points to the ways in which its existence has become naturalized and its domination of public space unquestioned." - text from a longer description by Nizan Shaked, http://www.howmanybillboards.org/, accessed 03/2010.
