Grotto Fountain

Lawrence Halprin and Jud Fine, 1993

Flower St. side, south of Spine.
The fountain provides a snapshot of the evolution of civil liberties in the U.S.

The upper well reads: All Born or Naturalized in the United States Are Citizens.

The lower well reads: No State Shall Abridge the Privileges or Immunities of Citizens Nor Shall Any State Deprive Any Person of Life, Liberty or Property, Without Due Process of Law Nor Deny Equal Protection (14th Amendment).

The arch/fascia reads: Power Concedes nothing Without a Demand * It Never Did * It Never Will (Frederick Douglass).
